Update: Ekiti Governor declares day of mourning for Afuye

The Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji has postponed state functions and declared a day of mourning in honour of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly Mr Funminiyi Afuye, who died yesterday, in Ado-Ekiti at the age of 66.

The Governor, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Yinka Oyebode, said Afuye’s death was shocking, sad and unfortunate.

Oyebanji said the speaker’s death was unbelievable as he was on the Governor’s entourage during an inspection tour of some projects in Ado- Ekiti on Tuesday and did not show any sign of illness.

The Governor also postponed the swearing-in ceremony for the newly appointed Secretary to the State Government, Dr Habibat Adubiaro and the Attorney -General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Dayo Apata, SAN following the death of the Speaker.

Oyebanji who prayed God to console the family of the deceased also declared a day of mourning for the departed statesman and directed that state functions including the swearing-in of the newly appointed Secretary to the State Government and the Attorney General, be postponed.

Ekiti lost an illustrious son, a perfect gentleman and a champion of democracy and rule of law. My heart bleeds over the loss of this great leader who was a great friend and brother indeed.

On behalf of myself, my wife, the Government and good people of Ekiti State, I commiserate with the Afuye family and the people of Ikere Ekiti. May the good Lord give everyone of us the fortitude to bear this loss”, Oyebanji said.

Seven-day mourning

In the meantime, the Ekiti State House of Assembly has declared a 7- day of mourning in honour of the departed Speaker.

In a statement in Ado-Ekiti, the Chairman House Committee on Media, Mrs Yemisi Ayokunle said the flag in the Assembly complex would be flown at half-mast during the period.

Mrs Ayokunle who described the late Speaker as an embodiment of courage, excellence and a highly committed man to public service, maintained that Mr. Afuye would be greatly missed.

Mr Funminiyi Afuye died on Wednesday evening at the Ekiti State Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado- Ekiti, where he was receiving treatment after suffering a cardiac arrest.

The late Afuye, 66, was a former Commissioner, Ekiti State Ministry of Information and two- time member of the State Assembly.

He was inaugurated Speaker of the sixth Assembly on June 6, 2019.
