Assault: Nasarawa varsity dissociates self from lecturer

Dr Fred Ayokhai

The Federal University of Lafia in Nasarawa State has dissociated itself from one of its lecturers in the Department of History and International Studies, Dr Fred Ayokhai, who was arrested by the police with his family members for allegedly assaulting a 20-year-old woman.

A statement by the university’s Head, Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Abubakar Ibrahim said the action of Dr Ayokhai and his family members, who resorted to a physical attack on the victim over a quarrel with his 17-year-old daughter, was “not only shameful but despicable and unpardonable”.

It stressed that even though the victim, Blessing Mathias, is not a student of the university, the school would not condone any act contrary to its core values of “integrity, discipline and innovation “as exhibited by Dr Ayokhai.

The statement also called on the police to thoroughly investigate the matter to ascertain the level of involvement of the lecturer in the act, and to guide the university in taking further actions.

Last week, Dr Ayokhai and his family members, including his teenage daughter, Emmanuella, were arrested by the police for allegedly assaulting the young woman, Ms Mathias.

Eyewitness reports said the university lecturer and his two sons had been mobilised to Ms Mathias’s residence by his daughter, Emmanuella, in a reprisal attack wherein they stripped the young woman naked, forced her into their car and drove her to the bush even as they video-recorded the incident and shared it on social media.
