ECOWAS pledges to support INEC towards credible elections

Former Chairman of Ghana’s Electoral Commission, Kwadwo Afari-Gyan at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

The Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) has pledged to support INEC in its efforts to hold credible elections next year.

The leader of the delegation and Former Chairman of Ghana’s Electoral Commission, Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, pledged the support of the subregional body when he led a pre-election fact-finding team to INEC headquarters in Abuja.

Mr Afari-Gyan, who said the delegation would meet with other stakeholders to ascertain their preparedness and challenges told his hosts that the outcome of their findings would enable ECOWAS to know where to assist towards ensuring that INEC conducts a credible election in 2023.

He also promised that the ECOWAS delegation will be visiting the six geo-political zones, Resident Electoral Commissioners, as well as Religious and Traditional Rulers in order to carry everyone along in both the preparations and actual conduct of the elections.

Responding, INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu said the commission was ready to conduct technology-driven, credible elections.

He maintained that INEC was ready to receive inputs from the International Community to assist it in carrying out credible and acceptable polls in 2023.

Professor Yakubu assured his guests that the commission would meet meeting a cross-section of stakeholders later in the week “to rub minds and plan the way forward”.
