Cameroun’s keeper voted star player in CAF encounter

Cameroun’s Indomitable Lions goalkeeper, Ange Gabrielle Bawou was overwhelmingly voted the star player of the match, as Nigerian Champions, Bayelsa Queens of Yenagoa defeated TP Mazembe Ladies of the DR Congo 2-0, in their second CAF Women’s Champions League Group B encounter, in Marrakech, Morocco, on Thursday night.

Having lost 1-2 in their opener to South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, the defending champions; Bayelsa Queens were in a must-win game, if they are to remain in the haunt of making it out of the Group.

An outstanding goalkeeper Bawou made a string of superb saves in the game to help the Prosperity Ladies bounce back into reckoning, with a hugely deserved 2-1 victory.

Bayelsa Queens made a fine start at Grande Stade de Marrakech with Chinyere Igbomalu winning a penalty for her side within 30 seconds of play, and eventual the Nigerian Champions were 2-0 ahead in the first half.

After the break, Bawou thwarted effort after effort by TP Mazembe Ladies, and all the Central Africa representatives, could do was to halve the deficit.

Bawou was expectedly named Player of the Match for her heroics; while Bayelsa Queens moved up to second position on the Group B log, following the win.

Another victory in their last group game against Egypt’s Wadi Degla on Sunday should see Bayelsa Queens make it to the semi-finals, of the eight team tournament, being hosted for the second time in two years, by Morocco.

Former Nigerian Champions, Rivers Angeles of Port Harcourt, flew the banner of the country in the 2021 event.

Holders, Mamelodi Sundowns meanwhile, maintained top position in the group after thrashing Wadi Degla.
