The FCT Minister Malam Muhammad Musa Bello says an holistic approach for maintenance of public facilities in the federation, especially as it relates to funding was necessary.
The Minister made the call during the flag off ceremony of ongoing rehabilitation and maintenance construction works of Federal Secretariat building, Phase One in Abuja.
Malam Bello explained that there was need for Government agencies to begin to recruit full time maintenance cadres in the civil service that would grow through the ranks toward institutionalizing effective maintenance structure and culture in the civil service.
He noted that the bureaucracy of the civil service procurement processes in earmarking funds for maintenance of public facilities has failed over the years, hence the need to review the way contract for the maintenance of public buildings are being executed.
The minister who said many contractors are either not familiar, or have no better understanding of the building design they are to maintain, pointed out that the procurement system that was introduced 10 to15 years ago has not worked.
He advised that the Service should henceforth, go back to basic maintenance system of having an in- house staff to work with contractors, towards building long lasting legacies.
In a remark, the Head Of Service of the Federation, Dr.Folashade Yemi Esan who expressed delight over the commencement of the Secretariats rehabilitation, reiterated the present Administration’s readiness to create safe, friendly and conducive environment for workers.
