Asaba township stadium collapses

Barely few days to the commencement of the 21st National Sports Festival, tagged Delta 2022, a section of the multi-purpose sports halls and shooting range storey building under construction at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba has collapsed.

The incident occurred when a crane carrying heavy iron fell on the building which was at roofing stage.

There was panic at the construction site and around the stadium as construction workers, sports men and women, journalists and spectators rushed to the scene to ascertain the extent of the collapse.

Some workers who allegedly sustained varying degrees of injuries were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee for the forthcoming National Sports Festival, Patrick Ukah, the State Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, and Olise Ifeajika, the Chief Press Secretary to Delta State Governor, were at the scene of the incident to douse tension.

Addressing newsmen, Mr. Aniagwu said it was a minor collapse, and that there was no casualty.

He said the accident was caused by misalignment of the crane by its operator which led to the heavy duty equipment crashing on the wall in one of the floors.

According to Aniagwu, contrary to reports of loss of lives only one person sustained minor injury and has since been treated while other workers have also returned to site.

When Radio Nigeria visited the scene, the construction workers had resumed work.
