Sadio Mane joins Senegal’s world cup squad despite injury

Bayern Munich star,  Sadio Mane has been named in Senegal’s World Cup squad despite being injured.

The West African country announced their official 26-man list on Friday morning for the Qatar tournament which begins in just over a week’s time.

Consequently, the former Liverpool forward, 30, will be among the players traveling to the Middle East country after FIFA’s Senegalese-born secretary-general, Fatma Samoura, said the country would use witch doctors to help him get to the competition.

Mane, who was key to Senegal winning the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time and also qualifying for Qatar-2022, limped off after 20 minutes during his Bayern’s 6-1 win against Werder Bremen on Tuesday. After the Bundesliga match, Bayern manager, Julian Nagelsmann said the Senegalese international would have an X-ray to assess the damage.

It was later reported by French outlet, L’Equipe that the injury to Mane was serious enough to keep the player out of the World Cup, which would be a huge blow to the reigning African champions.

On Thursday, Samoura, the number-2 man in FIFA, said Senegal “will go to extreme methods” to ensure he is present, admitting “they are not even sure if the unorthodox technique will work”, but that they are hoping for “miracles”.

Mane, who joined Bayern from Liverpool for £35 million in the summer, has been an exciting signing for the Bundesliga giants since joining them.

He has scored 11 goals in 23 appearances in all competitions for the German champions, as well as recording four assists.
