Saudi Arabia have defeated Argentina by a 2-1 win in a powerful second-half comeback that is only rivaled in magnitude by the US victory over England in the 1950 World Cup.

35-year-old Lionel Messi scored a 10th minute penalty in a dominant first-half display in which he and Lautaro Martinez also had three goals disallowed for offside.

The match, which held at Lusail Stadium, witnessed Argentina’s massive cheering crowd blended with thousands of Saudis present to boost the mural of their team.

The seeming underdogs, Saudi Arabia, ranked second-lowest team in the tournament after Ghana, were able to make their mark at the start of the second half, beating Argentina’s defence before the 88,012-strong crowd.

Saleh Al-Shehri with a low shot in the 48th minute, scored a goal. Then came Salem Al-Dawsari in the 53rd minute to shock the two-time World Cup winners in their Group C opening fixture.
