Malawi VP arrested over alleged $280,000 bribery scandal

Malawi’s Vice President, Saulos Chilima has been arrested and charged with several counts of corruption and allegedly taking bribe to influence government contracts.

In a statement, Malawi’s Anti-Corruption Bureau, ACB Spokeswomen, Egrita Mdala, says Mr Chilima is being charged for a bribery scandal involving a British-Malawian businessman.

“He received advantage in the form of money amounting to $280,000 and other items from British-Malawian businessman, Zuneth Sattar, for his companies to be awarded Malawi government contracts”, the statement reads.

The President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera had stripped Chilima of his powers in June when details of the alleged graft first emerged.

Several ministers and former ministers have already been arrested in connection with the case.
