African Champions, Senegal have defeated World Cup host, Qater 3-1 to record Africa’s first win at the tournament.
The Teranga Lions who lost their first match against the Netherlands were hoping to get a good response against their next opponents and they did in superb fashion.
Goals from Boulaye Dia, Famara Diedhiou, and Bamba Dieng were enough to beat Qatar, who will be eliminated if Group A leaders Netherlands avoid defeat to Ecuador on Friday
Boulaye Dia broke the deadlock four minutes before half-time, slamming home to inflict pain on Qatar’s Boualem Khoukhi who miscued a clearance.
Senegalese forward and former Bristol City striker, Famara Diedhiou increased the lead when he rose to flick in a glorious header just three minutes after the break.
Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy made stunning reflex saves to deny Almoez Ali and Ismail Mohamad, but he could do nothing about Qater’s Mohammed Muntari’s powerful header which reduced the two goal deficit to 1 thereby putting pressure on the Teranga Lions of Senegal.
The goal lifted the crowd and sent Qatar surging forward in search of another, but Bamba Dieng tucked in a goal in the 18 yard box in the 84th minute for Senegal’s third.
The result leaves Qater’s hope of qualifying for the round of 16 on the verge of collapse as they sit bottom of the group.
