Fire guts Onitsha main market

Fire has gutted a section of the popular Onitsha main market in Anambra State.

A trader within the market, Obenta Jude said the cause of the fire has not been established, noting that the fire started in the early hours of Monday.

Jude added that two blocks of shops within the section of the market known as Kano Street have so far been razed by the inferno.

The trader said efforts by firefighters who arrived at the scene shortly to put out the fire have not been successful as the fire continued raging.

Confirming the incident, Fire Chief, Engr Martin Agbili said his men were promptly deployed to the area immediately after he was alerted.

He said: “At about 2.20 am on Monday 28-11-2022, Anambra State Fire Service, received a distress call of a fire outbreak at Kano Street behind Main Market, Onitsha.

“The fire started around 1 am, and I quickly deployed my men there. So far, they have gone to refill the fire trucks with water twice, and our men have gone to refill a third time,” Agbili said.
