The United Kingdom has summon the Chinese Ambassador, Zheng Zeguang to the Foreign Office for a meeting over the arrest of a BBC journalist, Ed Lawrence who was detained in Shanghai.
Ed Lawrence was said to have been detained while covering anti-government lockdown protests in Shanghai on Sunday.
The Chinese government alleged that Mr. Lawrence did not voluntarily presented his press credentials.
According to the BBC, Lawrence was beaten and kicked by police officers, and then taken away in handcuffs.
The UK Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, who is currently in Romania, said the arrest was disturbing, noting that freedom of the press should be respected as Journalists must be able to do their job without intimidation.
Similarly, Foreign Office Minister David Rutley said the Chinese ambassador was summoned to give a thorough explanation as to the reason behind the arrest.
Meanwhile, China’s foreign ministry spokesman had on Monday said Mr Lawrence] did not identify himself as a journalist and also did not voluntarily present his press credentials.
