Morocco seals round16 spot for the 1st time in 36 years

The Atlas Lions of Morocco have qualified for the round of 16 for the first time in 36 years after defeating defeating Canada 2-1

2 first half goals from Hakim Ziyech and Youssef En-Nesyri sealed a comfortable victory for North Africans who finished as group F leaders.

Morocco, who last reached the knockout stages of the World Cup in 1986, will face the runners-up from Group E in the last 16.

The Atlas Lions of Morocco won two of their 3 matches and drew 1 thus becoming the second African team to reach the knockout stage at the ongoing World Cup in Qater.

Canada pulled a goal back 5 minutes from half-time when defender Sam Adekugbe skipped clear down the left and rifled in a low cross.

Morocco’s En-Nesyri scored a briliant 2nd only to be ruled out by Video Assistant Referee, VAR for offside.

Canada started the second half brightly, but Morocco held on to seal the victory.
