11-year-old boy rescued from fire in Ebonyi

An 11-year-old boy has been rescued from a fire that gutted a one-storey building in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

The fire, which occurred earlier on Friday, took place at No 28 Udensi Street in the state capital.

According to Eyewitness reports, the boy was sleeping in one of the flats when the fire broke out but was rescued by first responders, who had gone to save some of the affected properties.

One resident, Chinedu Nwaogba said he was alerted on the phone that his flat was on fire; but before he could rush back home, all his property had been destroyed in the blaze.

The Landlord of the House, Andy Ugwu blamed a “power surge” from the public electricity supply for the fire incident, adding that he lost all his belongings in the process.

The Director, Ebonyi State Fire Service, Raphael Ibiam, who was coordinating efforts to put out the fire  at the time of filing this report, explained that losses would have been more if not for their timely response.

Radio Nigeria gathered that no life was lost despite the explosion of a gas cylinder in one of the affected flats.
