Griner returns to US after prisoner swap with Russia

Brittney Griner (L) was arrested in February, few days before Russia invaded Ukraine. (R) Viktor Bout was serving a 25-year jail term in the US for conspiracy to kill U.S citizens, delivery of anti-aircraft missiles and providing aid to a terrorist organisation.

Brittney Griner has returned to her home state of Texas, ten months after leaving the United States to play basketball in Russia.

The two time gold-medal Olympian was imprisoned in February for bringing cannabis oil through a Moscow airport and was exchanged for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout on Thursday.

She was flown into San Antonio, where she will receive medical care.

The White House’s John Kirby told MSNBC on Friday morning that Griner is in “good spirits” and “good health”.

On Thursday, President Joe Biden announced that Griner would be coming home. Her wife, Cherelle Griner, was set to meet her in San Antonio after attending Mr Biden’s statement at the White House.

“Brittney has had to endure an unimaginable situation and we’re thrilled that she is on her way home to her family and friends,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement about her return.

She is one of America’s most well-known athletes. During the WNBA season, the double Olympic champion was a prominent center for the Phoenix Mercury.
