Accident on Lagos-Ibadan expressway kills 10

An auto crash on the notorious Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has claimed the lives of 10 persons and injured several others, according to a police source.

The accident, which occurred on Saturday, involved a Mack truck and a Toyota Hiace bus which were traveling in the Oniworo area.

The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, Ahmed Umar, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta.

Mr Umar said the accident was caused by “road obstruction” on the part of the trailer and overspeeding and brake-failure on the part of the bus driver.

He said the Toyota bus, marked KLD 539 XA, lost control and ran into the rear of the truck which had no registration number.

He continued: “A total of 19 people were involved in the crash which comprised 13 male adults and six female adults.Two male adults sustained injuries while seven male adults, two female adults and one female child died in the accident.”

The injured victims have been taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere for medical attention while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Ipara morgue, the Sector Commander said.

He urged motorists to always put on the headlamp during poor weather.

 He also admonished motorists, especially truck drivers, to always display caution signs “whenever there is a breakdown on the road”.
