NJC condemns non-payment of State Judges’ retirement benefits

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has decried the non-payment of retirement benefits, including severance pay, gratuity and pensions of Judicial Officers in some States.

A statement by the Director, Information, Soji Oye said the Council registered its displeasure at the its 100th Meeting held on Thursday, under the Chairmanship of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

The Council condemned in very strong terms the act, which it said is “undermining the Rule of Law” and Section 6 of the 1999 Constitution.

Consequently the NJC called on the “offending States” to ensure that all entitlements of retired Judges “are fully settled forthwith”.

It also directed State Chief Judges to file reports on compliance, to reach the Council not later than April 1 2023.
