2023: EU tasks INEC on free, fair elections

The Chief Observer European Union Election Observation mission for 2023 General Election, Mr Barry Andrews, has appealed to stakeholders to ensure that the coming elections are peaceful, free and fair.

Mr Andrews made the appeal at the official launch of the observation mission, in Abuja.

He explained that all observers are guided by a code of conduct which requires strict impatiality and non inter-ference in the election process.

Mr Andrews said forty long term observers had been deployed to follow the electoral process in all the 36 states of the federation.

The EU chief Observer said the mission would also study the new electoral law and interact with the stakeholders on the challenges ahead.

According to him, the 2022 electoral act which introduced new measures aimed at enhancing various aspect of the conduct, would be closely followed to monitor its implementation.

The Chief observer further explained, that the mission had met with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, media representatives and had noted their concerns.

He maintained that the Election Observation Mission is expected to present its preliminary reports two days after the elections.
