Lead Trainer Wikipedia in the classroom Mrs Obialugaeriaku Ezeilo
A lead Wikipedia trainer and educationist Mrs Obialugaeriaku Ezeilo, says effective use of technology in the educational system will enhance students performance in meeting the 21st century digital literacy drive.
Mrs Ezeilo who spoke during one of the teachers training sessions in Abuja, added that continuous training programs for teachers on digital literacy tools should be promoted to achieve the much needed feat.
She said ” Reading Wikipedia in the classroom, a program organized in collaboration with the federal ministry of education was necessary to bridge the digital gap between students and teachers for enhanced academic performance”.
“This program would aid teachers and students to improve their research works, technology skills, content and provide alternative means of learning new things outside the regular classroom school curriculum “She noted.
A certified Wikipedia trainer Mr Ismael Atiba who also spoke at the training, said for efficient use of Wikipedia, the teachers had been taught how to search, retrieve and organize information for new knowledge.
In his words”The curriculum of this program is inline with UNESCO Media and information Framework, which connects with different methodologies used in the classroom to leverage the Wikipedia as a learning tool”.
Earlier the Minister of State for Education Mr Goodluck Opia, represented by an Assistant Director in the Ministry Mr Afomowe Olugbolahan, charged the teachers to use the knowledge they have gained into practice to achieve optimal classroom productivity.
The Ministry of Education and Wikimedia Foundation organized the training for Secondary School teachers in the Federal Capital Territory.
