NBA promises to support INEC on credible polls

The Nigeria Bar Association, NBA says it will support the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) as they prepare to conduct elections in the country.

The President Nigeria Bar Association, (NBA), Mr Yakubu Maikyau, stated this in Abuja when he led a delegation to the INEC headquarters.

Mr Maikyau said that the visit was to interact with the leadership of the electoral body on areas of partnership and collaboration.

He said they would provide guidance to the commission as far as interpretation of law was concerned.

The President of the Association noted that the NBA would be fully involved in the forthcoming elections and would not leave any trace of wrong perception.

INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu said the Commission had accredited members of NBA as observers, and urged them to be neutral while carrying out their duties on election days.

Professor Yakubu appealed to the legal body to assist the Commission in pre election litigation as INEC had been joined in 1241 cases.

“Out of the 1241 cases, three hundred are before the High Court while one hundred and fifty five are before the Supreme Court”.

Professor Yakubu urged the NBA to assist the Commission with suggestions and ideas on how they can collaborate to ensure that electoral act defaulters are dealt with expeditiously.
