Gunmen kill 34 in Benue IDP camp

Gunmen in the early hours of Saturday killed 34 people at LGEA primary school Ingbian IDP camp and its surrounding in Nyiev, Guma Local Government Area, Benue State.

The victims are those who have been taking refuge at the primary school after their displacement by similar attacks in their villages several months ago.

A source told Radio Nigeria that the gunmen stormed the area in the early hours of the day when the IDPs were fast asleep and opened fire leaving 35 dead with many seriously injured.

Police Public Relations Officer, Benue State Command, SP Sewuese Anene who confirmed the attack said 28 corpses have so far been recovered.

This incident comes barely 24 hours after an attack in Umogidi Community in Otukpo Local Area which claimed 46 lives.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the recent killings in Benue State IDP Camp.

The President, in a statement, called on Nigerians to unite against terrorism as all efforts must be put in place to end the extreme violence.

President Buhari reprobated the use of terrorism as means of settling inter-communal conflicts, called for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and face the wrath of the law.
