Group demands justice for INEC commissioner assaulted in Adamawa

Prof Abdullahi Zuru

The Adamawa Governorship Supplementary elections may have come and gone, but the reactions that the outcome of the elections generated have continued to increase.

The latest reaction has come from the Governing Council of the Institute of Chattered Chemists of Nigeria (ICCON). The Institute is calling for the prosecution of those responsible for assaulting the former Vice-Chancellor of Usman Danfodiyo University, and INEC National Commissioner, Professor Abdullahi Zuru, during the just-concluded Adamawa governorship supplementary elections.

In a statement, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Professor Fanna Abdulrahman, said it was the Federal Government and the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba who should prosecute the perpetrators.

According to ICCON, Professor Zuru was seen in a viral video being assaulted and beaten up by some persons for refusing to take part in some alleged shady deals organised by the suspended INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Yunusa-Ari.

It described Professor Zuru as a “man with impeccable character”, who was only serving his country, and as such, should not have been subjected to such “inhumane treatment”.

The statement added that as a former President and Chairman of the 3rd Governing Council of ICCON, the prestige of the organisation had been affected, as the perpetrators of such act should be immediately prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.
