Lionel Messi on club side duty.
Football superstar Lionel Messi will leave Paris St-Germain this season after his current contract expires.
The Argentine World Cup winner had reached an ‘agreement in principle’ to spend another year but neither club nor player now want to sign the deal.
Messi is not convinced the club can compete at the top of the European game, due to financial issues, while the French champions want to focus more on developing young talent.
He signed a two-year deal in Paris in 2021 with an option to renew for another year but PSG will now not want to activate that part of the contract.
The play maker believes that PSG’s budget could be limited next season so they can comply with Financial Fair Play rules that will put the quality of their squad at risk.
Messi’s reluctance to commit to a new deal in recent months has frustrated the club owned by Qatari’s who believe the 35-year-old lack of response was a clear message he didn’t want to stay.
