10th NASS: Betara officially declares interest

The Chairman house of Representatives committee on appropriation Muktar Betara, has officially declared his intention to run for the office of the Speaker of the 10th House in Abuja.

Mr Betara made the declaration in defiance with the zoning arrangement of the ruling APC.

The declaration came amid the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, choice of Senator Godswill Akpabio from South-south and Mr. Tajudeen Abass from the North West as preferred candidates for the Senate Presidency and speaker for the 10th assembly.

Explaining their reasons for defying the zoning arrangement, the deputy speaker of the house Ahmed Wase explained that they want to ensure the independence of the parliament.

“To ensure that we work together. Every Parliamentarian must rise to the occasion. We will work as a team. We will not allow this parliament to be hijacked. We will not allow this parliament to be made a lame duck. I believe we are loyal to our country first. Loyal to our party and loyal to our people.

On his part, the leader of the house Ado Doguwa, said the parliament must always be allowed to choose its leaders.

Some prominent aspirants for the office of the speaker also attended the event to show their solidarity to Betara’s candidacy.
